So, yesterday, I sent you a presentation called "One Funnel Away."
(Did you have a chance to watch it yet? If not, GO WATCH IT HERE ASAP)
In that video, one of the stories I told was about the funnel that literally saved Christmas for my family, as well as all of the employees on my team.
My new business that I had just started a year earlier was on the brink of
bankruptcy...
It was two weeks before Christmas at about 8:00 at night, and while most people were inside, warm with their families, I was outside on a rickety latter, with a thin coat on that couldn't keep out the cold, hanging up Christmas lights.
My fingers were so numb I couldn't feel them anymore...
But the real pain, wasn't from the cold.
It was the sick feeling of despair I felt in my stomach,
Knowing that tomorrow... just a few days before Christmas, I was going to have to walk into the office and deliver the worst message that ANYONE would ever hear during the holidays...
Not only would there be no Christmas bonuses... but after tomorrow... there would be no more jobs for anyone.
My closest friends... my family members... were all going to lose their jobs... because of me.
And while I was embarrassed, and nervous and sick, all at the same time...
I still look at that moment as the turning point in my personal and business life.
I always think back to that day and wonder...
If I could go back, what would I tell the younger version of myself...?
Is there ONE SECRET I could have shared that would have immediately solved my problem...?
Well, as fate would have it, that night, as I was slowly moving the ladder around my house and stapling in lights under our frozen rain gutter.
My mind was racing trying to figure out some trick, some strategy, SOMETHING that would magically save my dying business...
And then it happened...
I had the Epiphany... and it struck hard and fast... just like a bolt of lightening.
A funnel we could create that just might save my business from failing...
Something that if I executed fast... I may not have to fire anyone the next day!
It was so so simple... could it work?
For the first time in months I had a ray of hope...
Maybe, just maybe I could save Christmas for everyone!
So, I hurried and finished hanging the lights, and then I called up the core people on my team... we all drove into the office and I sketched out the funnel on a whiteboard.
